De Brand Manager is verantwoordelijk voor de verbetering van de marktpositie van een bestaand bedrijf of product, of het introduceren van een nieuw product op de markt. Hiertoe geeft hij leiding aan een team van professionals uit verschillende disciplines en van verschillende afdelingen. Hij coördineert de werkzaamheden en is de eindverantwoordelijke van het project.

Zowel voor de lancering van een nieuw product als voor de vernieuwde marketing van een bestaand product moet onderzoek gedaan worden naar de wensen van de consument. Op basis van kwantitatief en kwalitatief marktonderzoek wordt het product ontwikkeld. De Brand Manager overziet dit creatieve proces van productontwikkeling en denkt vervolgens actief mee bij de uitvoering ervan. Aspecten die bij de realisatie van een productconcept komen kijken zijn onder andere het financiële plaatje, de communicatie- en marketingstrategie - en uiteindelijke verkoop. De Brand Manager verliest hierbij de wensen van de consument nooit uit het oog. 

Meer precieze aandachtsgebieden van de Brand Manager zijn bijvoorbeeld de vormgeving van de verpakking van een product, de inhoud van reclameboodschappen, het gewenste imago van het bedrijf of product en de analyse van marktonderzoek. Om zicht te houden op de behoefte van de consument kan het zijn dat de Brand Manager verkooppunten bezoekt. Naast doelstellingen voor de korte termijn (in de markt zetten van een product, toename verkoopcijfers) houdt de Brand Manager ook de lange termijn in het oog. Hij is altijd op de hoogte van alle ontwikkelingen op het gebied van zijn product en zal alles op alles zetten om concurrenten voor te blijven.

De Brand Manager is de persoon die de verschillende medewerkers van diverse afdelingen (sales, productontwikkeling, planning, reclamebureaus) bij elkaar brengt in een team en zorgt dat alle werkzaamheden worden verricht met hetzelfde doel voor ogen. Daarnaast levert hij een belangrijke bijdrage aan (de analyse van) het marktonderzoek dat de basis vormt voor de marketing van het product. Hij moet dus zowel leidinggevende kwaliteiten hebben als inhoudelijk sterk zijn, met gevoel voor consumentenbehoeftes.
