Er zijn geen specifieke standaardmogelijkheden om door te kunnen groeien. Wel valt te denken aan een senior positie in het managementteam van het betreffende bedrijf of instituut, een gespecialiseerde technische functie of juist een algemenere functie met meer verantwoordelijkheden.

In het geval van bijvoorbeeld de olie-industrie hangt de baanzekerheid af van de prijs van olie. Wanneer deze keldert, zullen de bedrijven geneigd zijn olie te vervaardigen uit zekerdere bronnen en het onderzoek terzijde te schuiven. In alle gevallen draagt sociale mobiliteit bij aan carrièrekansen.

Aangezien oliewinning zich altijd blijft ontwikkelen, evenals het feit dat onderzoek naar en de voorspelling van aardbevingen nodig blijft, zullen de arbeidsmarktperspectieven met dit specialisme naar alle waarschijnlijkheid gunstig blijven (in de commerciële sector).
