De Reservist kan zijn functie gebruiken om zijn integriteit, doorzettingsvermogen, discipline en stressbestendigheid aan te tonen.
Het is geheel afhankelijk van de vooropleiding van de Reservist in welke sectoren hij deze ervaring kan toepassen. Het is wel bekend dat de overheid en het bedrijfsleven deze aspecten waarderen.
Binnen de Nationale Reserve is het mogelijk om 'Specialist Reservist' te worden, met een fulltime baan binnen de Landmacht. Tevens is het mogelijk om als parttimer door te groeien naar hogere functies. Wanneer een Reservist een voltijd baan binnen andere onderdelen van de Lanmacht nastreeft kan hij/zij de Nationale Reserve gebruiken als opstap. Zo kunnen er bijvoorbeeld vrijstellingen worden verkregen voor afgeronde opleidingen binnen de Natres.
