De Matroos kan werkzaam blijven binnen zijn/haar huidige functiesoort gedurende een langere periode. Dit kan zowel bij zijn/haar huidige baas zijn als bij een concurrent.

Buiten de 'scheepvaart' zou de Matroos werkzaam kunnen worden 'aan land'. Deze functies betreffen bijvoorbeeld administratieve ondersteuning aan de zee- en binnenvaart vanuit de thuisbasis van het bedrijf.
