Er is op het moment voldoende werk te vinden voor een Opticien. Toch is door de recessie het aantal beschikbare banen in 2009 afgenomen.
Als je in loondienst werkt kun je toewerken naar een hogere positie in het bedrijf of een eigen bedrijf gaan beginnen (hiervoor heb je een Opticien Manager diploma voor nodig).
